Learn about Mississippi’s Natural Environment and Biological Diversity
November 22nd, 2008 by admin
Visitors to Jackson, Mississippi enjoy spending a day in the Museum of Natural Science, located in the historic LeFleur’s Bluff State Park. 300 acres and 2.5 miles of nature trails provide a beautifully landscaped backdrop to the 73,000 square foot indoor facilities. The museum’s greenhouse, also called “The Swamp”, provides hundreds of natural flora and fauna specimens from the state. Native endangered species are discussed and displayed as part of the 870,000 total specimens. This comprises the largest known collection of Mississippi vertebrates and freshwater mussels.Founded in 1932 by Fannye Cook, the museum aims to promote the understanding and learning about Mississippi’s biological diversity, environment, protection and preservation. Children learn about local species in the Discovery Room and Kids Club, and parents listen to educational nature lectures in the auditorium, given by industry and museum experts. The Dragonflye Shoppe, library, permanent and special exhibits provide plenty of activities for everyone to learn and explore throughout the day. Life-size displays of local natural habitats, and 100,000 gallons of aquarium exhibits containing more than 200 species, provide an up-close-and-personal look at the state’s natural treasures.
