What Causes High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is an extremely common disorder which affects about one in three Americans but just what causes high blood pressure? The vast majority of sufferers (about 90% to 95%) have what is known as essential or primary hypertension which develops slowly over several years and has no known or clearly identifiable cause. The remaining 5% to 10% of sufferers have what is called secondary hypertension which is hypertension resulting from a known and identifiable underlying condition. There are many conditions which can lead to secondary hypertension including congenital heart defects, kidney problems and problems with the adrenal gland. Some medications, including birth control pills and many over-the-counter cold remedies, can also lead to secondary hypertension.
