A High School Health Teacher Discusses Alcohol Poisoning

“Can a person exhibit the signs of alcohol poisoning even if he or she doesn’t drink excessively? In other words, can a person who drinks moderately experience alcohol poisoning?” Marlene asked her health teacher. Mr. Thomason thought about this for a moment and then responded in the following way, “there may be instances when a person could suffer from an alcohol overdose from drinking one or two drinks. In fact, about the only way this can happen is if this particular person’s liver cannot metabolize the one or two drinks the person has consumed. The point, then, is not necessarily how much a person drinks but rather how much alcohol a person’s body can process that dictates whether or not he or she will experience an alcohol overdose.”
