6 Times the Cost

I just read an astonishing headline that I have a hard time adjusting to. I just read the average mutual fund company charges about 6 times more than the best vanguard funds. How can this be? I recently gave some money to my financial planner and he advised me of a fund which was not with vanguard. I am anxious to call him and figure out what percentage he earned because I went with his suggestion. Is this typical that funds can charge so much even when you are giving them your money to invest in? I would think they should give you a discount because they get to play with your money.
